Doing the house painting yourself especially if you have no prior experience will not be as good as the output of a professional house painter, this you got to admit to yourself. They already possess skills and experience to produce a flawless and professional looking house painting result. This does not mean of course that you stop your plans of painting your walls, instead you just need to plan ahead, learn what you can about the task ahead, and have enough patience and persistence to finish the job.

Paints come in two general types: water based also known as acrylic and oil base or alkyd paint. Water based are the more popular among the two and perhaps in the future water based paint will replace the oil based.
Professional house painters however prefer oil-based paint since it has a hard and more protective finish on the surface than its water-based counterpart.

Okay, here's what you need to start painting your walls:

Rags, drop cloth, painter's tape, primer, painter roller, good quality paint, replacement roller pad, and roller pan. Have all the above materials at hand before you get started.

Now, here's a step by step guide on how to start your house painting project correctly:

Cover with plastic the edges of your doors and windows so it won't be touched by paint.

Check the wall for damages. In case there is conceal it with the spackle, wait for a few hours until it dries up then sand it.

The walls are now ready for paint. Pour just the right amount of paint on your roller pan. Coat the roller with it and roll away first on the edges of the wall, door, and windows.

After all edges are covered with paint, you can now start with the rest of the wall. Paint slowly and evenly making sure you completely cover the surface touched with your roller. When you are done, check again for missed spots and fix it.

After covering all the surface with paint, wait for the paint to dry then you can remove the plastic tapes that placed on the edges of the doors and walls.[Via]
