1. Make a list of colors you like and colors you dislike.
The first thing a professional decorator will do is ask you about your preferences. They want to know what colors you love, but more importantly, which colors you absolutely hate!

2. Determine your color tolerance.

The professional decorator will want to know if you can live with saturated color on your walls or if your vision is of pastels. They will also want to know if you firmly believe that ceilings and trim must always be white or if you are willing to try something different.

3. Find pictures of rooms you love.

A professional decorator will usually give you a sample book of rooms that they have completed to get an idea of what styles you positively react to.

4. Take stock of your home.

A professional decorator will do a walk-through of your home to get a feel of how you live. They will concentrate on the room they are decorating, taking note of the natural light available, which will affect the final appearance of the paint color you choose.
Another consideration will be the artificial light that will be added. Wall colors will change depending on whether you use lamps or ceiling, track or pot lights.

5. Take stock of your furnishings.
A professional decorator will ask you what furnishings are staying in the room. They may also ask if they can paint, stain or otherwise alter the items. This is an important factor.
Say you have a large, built-in wall unit in natural pine that must stay in the room and must not be altered. The decorator will not propose a home color design that ignores the unit. They will have to embrace it and work around it.

6. The final step is pulling it all together.
The professional decorator will take all of the notes to coordinate a plan that works for you. They will create a project board to demonstrate their recommended paint color options in the context of the fabric colors, drapery patterns, wall art and accessories..

You can easily duplicate this process by taking all of your notes, gathering samples and making a project board to visualize the end result and check for harmony between all the colors in the scheme. It doesn't have to be fancy - a piece of poster board will do just fine.

Spend some time playing with your options until you find what pleases you, then make your dream room a reality![Via]
